NavigAbile is an internet-based system aimed to provide an innovative way to access web content to children and youths affected by motor, mental and communicational disabilities. It offers a cluster of telecommunication services designed, on one side, to enhance web interface and content accessibility and, on the other, to supply communication and relation tools.
These services are tailored to support disabled people, especially if accustomed to use multimodal communication tools (alternative communication techniques based on the use of symbols, images and photos such as Augmentative Alternative Communication), allowing them to:
• recover, empower and exploit their skills, mainly referring to relation and communication;
• use a multimodal interface which may be tailored to the needs and profile of the single user (and not vice-versa);
• allow to access, directly or with the help of another person, to the same contents and services offered to every people of their same age (educational contents, news, relation and communication services, …), making easier the integration of all users on the web;
• overcome the “digital divide” related to the web (needed human support, expensive ad hoc software and hardware, need of customised working stations).
Futhermore, respecting WAI criteria and using our tools and methodologies, it will be easy, for web sites owners and developers, rendering WAI accessible and then “NavigAbile” (i.e. accessible also to people with communication difficulties) their web pages. We ensure our advisory to web sites developers and owners, during their activity of analysis and develop of their web pages. In this way they can abate their costs in knowledge and know how referred to WAI accessibility criteria and creation of web pages in NavigAbile version.
Users of the service are mainly children and youths – but adults as well - with different kinds of disabilities and using multimodal communication strategies, by themselves or with assistance. Meanwhile, teachers and staff members who work with these people every day now have access to a tool that facilitates communication through multiple and complementary channels. An additional target are all those websites and portals which, in the future, will choose to adopt NavigAbile services in full or in part.
